Function / Content

This series consists of a file containing returns for Commonwealth Statistics for the years 1927/1928 and 1928/1929 including names and wages of police trackers, number of prisoners in Gaol and numbers of arrests and convictions in Magistrates' Courts. Included is a list of all Aboriginal people brought before the Court Alice Springs between 01/07/1927 and 30/06/1928. Also included are copies of 10 coversheets to reports and letters of complaint directed to Commissioner O'Kelly. One piece of correspondence on file is a copy of a memo, dated 20/01/1929, addressed to Ida Standley (matron at the Bungalow) from CH Noblet (Chief Protector of Aboriginals, Central Australia) asking for an explanation, in writing, as to why she did not apply for his permission to be allowed to leave her post at Jay Creek to travel in to Alice Springs. A copy of her response is including, also dated 20/01/1929, that verbal permission had been given by the Government Resident and that Sister Cavanagh was on duty. Some language used in these records (which reflects the language used at the time the records were created) may be offensive. This series may contain references to Aboriginal people who have died, which may cause sadness and distress to their relatives. No offence has been intended by making these records available. Care and discretion should be used when viewing these records.
